An honor killing is the murder of a person accused of ‘bringing shame’ on their family or community. Although men can fall victim, most honor killings involve women and girls. The barbarity is unthinkable as most victims are often killed by their own family members, namely parent(s) and male sibling(s).

Victims are often murdered for the following reasons:

a. Talking to an unrelated male

b. Rejecting a marriage partner chosen by family members

c. Committing or being accused of adultery

d. Becoming pregnant out of wedlock

e. Not dressing conservatively enough

f. Being a victim of rape (!?). Yes, being raped by some perpetrator(s) then being murdered by family member(s) for it!

Ironically, murderers actually get reduced sentences in cases when honor is the motivation. When a murderer is convicted of an honor killing, often they receive no more than two years jail in non-Western countries.

According to the United Nations, about 5,000 women are murdered by family members in honor killings every year.

1) USA

A recent study by the U.S. Justice Department quoted research that estimates between 23 and 27 honor killings occur each year in the United States and there are 1,500 forced marriages.

Gelareh Bagherzadeh, 30, Iranian activist and researcher, from Houston, TX, was shot to death by Ali Irsan with the helps of his wife, Shmou Ali Alrawabdeh, and their 21-year-old son, Nasim, for helping his daughter to marry a Christian man.

Sandeela Kanwal, 25, from Atlanta, GA, was strangled to death by her father, Chaudhry Rashid, Pakistan-born, with a bungee cord, for wanting a divorce.

Amina Said, 18, and her sister Sarah, 17, both from Dallas, TX, were shot 11 times by their father, Yaser Abdel Said, Egypt-born, and abandoned in a hotel (Omni Mandalay Hotel) parking lot, for having non-Muslim boyfriends.

Aasiya Zubair Hassan, 37, from New York City, was stabbed and beheaded by her husband, Muzzammil Hassan, the Pakistan-born founder and owner of Bridges TV, for divorcing him.

Noor Almaleki, 20, in a Phoenix valley, AZ, was run over and killed by her father, Faleh Hassan Almaleki, Iraqi-born, for being “too Westernized“.

Abbas’ father and sister, 21, were shot and killed in their village, by Mohammad Ajmal Choudhry, a Pakistan-born New York City cab driver, for helping his daughter to get away from forced marriage.

Palestina (Tina) Isa, 16, from St. Louis, MO, was stabbed and killed by her parents, Zein and Maria Isa, Palestine-born, for dating a non-Muslim boy.

Shaima Alawadi, 32, mother of 5, was beaten to death with a car iron by her husband, Iraq-born, for wanting a divorce.

Fauzia A. Mohammad, 19, from Henrietta, N.Y., was stabbed and killed by her brother, for immodest dressing.

Hatice Peltek, 39, from Scottsville, N.Y., was stabbed and killed by her husband, Ismail Peltek, Turkey-born, for being raped, along with her daughter, by his brother (!?)

Dr. Lubaina Bhatti Ahmed, from St. Clairsville, Ohio, along with her father and child, were stabbed and killed by her husband, for wanting a divorce.

Marlyn Hassan, 29, late in pregnancy with twins, from Jersey City, NJ, along with her mother and sister, were stabbed and killed by her husband, Alim Hassan, a Guyanese Muslim, for refusing to convert from Hinduism to Islam.

2. UK

Laura Wilson, 17,  from Rotherham, South Yorkshire, was stabbed and killed. She became the first white victim of honor killing in UK

Banaz Mahmod, 20, was strangled by her father and uncle just hours before she was buried in a Birmingham garden, for divorcing her first husband from an arranged marriage and falling in love with another man. Her cousin who helped burying her body was “still proud of what he did”, according to the judge.

3. Canada

Zainab Shafia, 19, Sahar Shafia, 17, and Geeti Shafia, 13, from Montreal, along with their first step mother (via secret, illegal polygamous arrangement) Rona Amir Mohammad, 52, were drowned by their parents, Tooba Mohammad Yahya and Mohammad Shafia, Afghanistan-born, for being too Westernized.

Aqsa Parvez, 16, from Toronto, was strangled and killed by her father, Muhammad Parvez and brother, Waqas Parvez, both Pakistan-born, for refusing to wear a hijab and running away from home.

Shahdady, from Toronto, was strangled and killed by her husband Abdul Malik Rustam, Pakistan-born, in a burqa, for wanting a divorce.

4. Pakistan

%83 of Pakistanis support stoning for adultery, and only 8 percent oppose it.

%40 of Pakistanis support honor-killings for premarital sex 

Sajjad Ahmed, 26, and Muawia Bibi, 18, were decapitated by the bride’s family, for refusing a forced marriage.

Saba Masqood, 18, was shot and left for dead inside of a sack in a canal by her brother, for refusing a forced marriage.

Pregnant Farzana Parveen, 25, was killed with bricks, outside a court building, by a group of 20 people, including her relatives and immediate family members, for refusing a forced marriage and instead romancing her future husband Mohammad Iqbal who had killed his first wife 6 years ago so he could (re)marry Parveen.

Although the issue of honor killings is mostly associated with women, %33 of Pakistanis said that honor killings of men can be often (%23) or sometimes justified (%10).

 

 

 

 

 

Uzbekistan showed the largest gap (-%14) of Muslims disapproving of women (%60) committed honor killings versus those committed by men (%46). In other words, the Muslims here were misogynistic even in judging criminal, murdering acts perpetrated by, not on, women.

Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iraq, and Afghanistan earned the less than exemplary distinction of being the countries with the smallest percentages of Muslims disapproving honor-killings (averagely %47, %36, %28, %24, respectively), or with the largest percentages of Muslims approving honor-killings, (averagely  %53, %64, %72, %76, respectively). 

Jordan, Iraq, Egypt, and Lebanon interestingly showed the largest gaps  (averagely %47, %11, %10, and %10, respectively) of Muslims disapproving honor-killings committed by Muslim men versus those committed by Muslim women, with more disapproval toward those committed by Muslim men (!?). For example, %81 Jordanians disapproved honor killings committed by men, but only %34 Jordanians disapproved those committed by women. Taqiyya/kitman were involved?

 

5. Afghanistan

19-year-old Muslim girl named Rokhshana from Firozkoh, stoned to death for refusing a forced marriage, Ghor Province, Afghanistan, Nov 3rd, 2015.

10 year old girl was raped (and slated for honor killing) by a mullah, 45

Amina, 18, from Baghlan Province, was shot to death by her family, for running from home and refusing a forced marriage

6. Syria

Fayyez stabbed his sister five times in the head and back while she was sleeping, shattering the base of her skull and nearly severing her spinal column.

7. Iran

Women are chattel and NOT human under Sharia Law.
